Since Graduation

It's been one year since I graduated dental school. A year full of terrifying, challenging and rewarding experiences. I may have bitten off a bit too much this year (excuse the dental humor), but I couldn't be happier where I am! So to welcome me back to the land of blogging I am going to list off the top 10 things I have learned this year. Without further ado...

1) Don't let your husband break his foot 1 week post new house move.  Make sure he knows how many stairs are in your brand new staircase and that he doesn't need to fix the wireless while descending upon said stairs.  Trust me on this one.

2) Speak loudly. Besides the backlash from the broken foot, Austin and I tend to speak at the level of mice.  This works for us, but for the rest of the worlds' population I have found that I need to take it up a notch.  So when I explain the difference between a root canal and an implant I now yell... as loud as my 10 year old sounding voice will go.

3) Enjoy nights.  It took about 6 months for the pit of my stomach to realize that when I leave work, I actually do leave work.  Gone are the dental school nights of studying, waxing, plastering and scheduling.  I cherish these. I now have a rigorous TV schedule to maintain, and I love every minute  of it!

4) Be proud.  One day while I was getting ready for the day I looked in the mirror and saw my scrubs.  It became clear that I WAS A DENTIST! All the years of school were complete and I had achieved my goal.

5) You can't save every tooth.  I went to dental school envisioning that I could save every tooth I met.  I was going to be the evangellical preacher of dentistry. Then I went to dental school and became a dentist. One day a young girl came in with a badly decayed tooth. She was younger than me, and I was distraught to have to pull her precious tooth.  The other dentist in the practice gave the sound advice that I couldn't keep her teeth for her.  While I still struggle every time I have to pull a tooth on a young patient, I am learning that I can't go home with patients to brush their teeth.

6) Decorate and re-decorate. In the year we've been in our house, our dining area has changed 5 times.  I have a problem.  In stores I really like this sea green color, but when I get it home I remember I really don't.

7) Remember if you have met the patient before.  If you aren't sure... look at patient records. Turns out people don't like to be introduced more than once.  Really it's a good life lesson.  If only people on the street had a legally binding patient record accessible at all times.

8) When your husband gets offered a job at Microsoft... take it.  We spent way too much time questioning this decision.  Turns out Microsoft is wonderful.  Epic win for our year.

9) Patients hate the dentist.  You aren't going to change this.  It's been going on since the beginning of time. Get thick skin and hope they don't have any cavities.

10) Love where you live.  I'm still working on this.  I miss Omaha. Wyoming is hard to love sometimes.  There is no one our age here and there are no good restaurants.  It snowed 12 inches last week, but it does have a few redeeming qualities.

Freedom!

School this summer is kind of a joke.  We finished finished the majority of our classes in May so most of June I got out of school at noon.  After 3 years of constant stress this summer has been unbelievably nice.  Since my schedule of being a stay at home wife (minus clinic hours) is pretty open... I was able to plan a perfect 4th of July.  This year's Independence Day was bound to be better than last years because of no boards and easy school, but I wanted our last Omaha 4th to be extra awesome. Our day included the home run derby, BBQs, pool time, bike ride and fireworks x3.  It was interesting to watch fireworks at 11 PM and still be sweating in 90+ degree weather.  Please excuse how gross I look in the pics.  My hair and Omaha's humidity have a love/hate relationship.

TD Ameritrade Park for all those visitors who never came to witness Omaha's claim to fame...
 the College World Series

Leave it to Omaha for there to be a wedding added to the home run derby, concert and fireworks extravaganza.  I really think this post will explain why I think Omaha is so great!

Remember there is still 1 more year to experience the class and glamour of the Midwest!

Featured at the home run derby was a band called Cowboy Mouth.  Austin and I have termed the genre as Metallica meets the Wiggles. They have deleted all the negative facebook comments, but trust me Omaha was not quite ready for their style.  I've never been to a concert that when the band yells, "Do you guys want to hear one more?" and the audience screams back, "No!"
It was kind of sad and I am hoping it was just an off night.

I hope all of your 4ths were as great as ours.  Happy Birthday America! I hope your birthday wish was for Mitt Romney to win.

Our First Anniversary

Our first year was perfect. There are countless memories that are priceless to me.  After all the years of dating and waiting to finally be together I can really say I made sure to soak it all in every day.

We had clinic/work on our anniversary so Austin met me at school for lunch.  We sat on paper (the official 1st anniversary gift) and had a picnic together.  That night we ate the top layer of our wedding cake... which for a cake that was a year old it was pretty great. We then toasted in hopes of our second year being even better!

That week we headed to San Diego for the rest of our celebration.  It was wonderfully perfect. We went to Sea World, Balboa Park, the beach and spent lots of time just being together. Also of note, we stopped by the Mormon Battalion visitors center, and is was awesome.

Remember Austin's little obsession with thinking he can eat insane quantities of food?  Well no romantic trip together is complete without him attempting said challenge. We found this jewel of a challenge at the Broken Yolk Cafe in San Diego.  He didn't finish, but I was glad he didn't!

So... Happy Anniversary Austin (and sorry your card is still blank and under the TV in the cabinet).

Letters

Dear 2011,
I loved you a lot.  I loved the planning, the bridal parties, the family and friends time and every second of the wedding.  I loved the honeymoon, the moving in together and every day since with my husband.  Dental school... I didn't love the boards, the terrifying clinic experiences or the hundreds of exams. However, I do love that I survived.  I also love that the idea of filling a tooth no longer keeps me up the entire night before.  2011... you brought surprises, sadness, humility, fun, responsibility, maturity, but mostly utter happiness. Thanks 2011 for making me who I want to be.
Sincerely, Erin

Dear 2012,
I am excited for you.  I look forward to an anniversary trip to California, to becoming a senior in dental school and to our last full year in Omaha! I will relish in my last year of having a real spring and fall, and enjoy the 16 more months of having shopping where I live.  Please don't let my 25th birthday come too fast... that seems way too close to being 30. It will be nice to rent a car for cheaper, though.  2012, teach me how to be a better me, and if you have time rebuild my desire to run again.  I hope that 2012 gives us some visitors to Omaha, and that the black eyed peas bring us prosperity. Oh, and Edward I look forward to you on November 16, 2012.
With Hopeful Admiration,
Erin

My Truelove gave to me...

We headed to Cheyenne for the holiday season.  We had all 6 of my siblings, spouses and 7 nieces and nephews.  It was crazy! However, my mom is amazing... notice the Christmas dinner place-settings.  It really was a perfect celebration.  Enjoy pictures of the craziness!!!

Halfsies

There is a wonderful time of year that Creighton likes to call "Fall Break."  That's right 3 days of no clinic, no classes and no tests. Mine was... well magical.  My running partner and I headed to Kansas City for the break.  We met my mom there for some pre-race shopping and exploring then husbands drove down to support us.  Saturday we conquered 13.1 miles.  While this may seem like a far stretch from my 30 by 30 goal, it is a pretty big deal for me.  Plus it means I get to take a break from 5:30 am runs! Please excuse the less than flattering post-13.1 mile pictures.

'

After the run we took advantage of mid-west living and headed over to Liberty Jail.  Even though I was a tad bit tired and sore, it was still a wonderful experience.  I'm sad the break is over, but I am now refreshed for another magical week of dental school.  Sometimes I just wish I could do half days of dental school too.

Midwest post Midterms

So 5 tests in 3 days, full patient schedule and lab work made for a really, really messed up week.  I NEEDED a perfect weekend... and luckily I had one.  Mexican food, brunch, apple picking, catching up on 19 Kids and Counting, and my last long run before my half marathon. Notice I did not mention any aspect of school! It was unbelievably wonderful. I managed to accomplish something way better than anything I do in school, though...

I realized on the way to the orchard that my domestic skills lacked in the area of what to do with the apples that we were about to pick.  Luckily I googled a recipe and attempted my first apple pie! How did it go?

Given it was NOT the best pie ever, but I made it.  I'm pretty proud of myself. Plus we now own a pie pan since Austin didn't think it would fit in my heart shaped cookie sheet.
